MERBABU : THE SLEEPING BEAUTY
If you are looking for that classic "land above the clouds" experience, Merbabu is often the top choice for both beginners and experienced trekkers.
Mount Merbabu (3,145 meters) is widely considered one of the most beautiful and "hiker-friendly" mountains in Central Java. While its neighbor, Mount Merapi, is famous for its fire and frequent activity, Merbabu is a dormant volcano known for its sweeping green savannas, rolling ridges, and panoramic views of nearly every major peak in Java.
If you are looking for that classic "land above the clouds" experience, Merbabu is often the top choice for both beginners and experienced trekkers.
Moderate. It is less steep than Mount Sumbing but still requires good stamina for the long summit push.
Most people do a 2-day, 1-night trip to enjoy the sunrise, but a very long "day hike" is possible for the ultra-fit.
There are three main routes to reach the summit of Mount Merbabu:
Selo: The most popular and scenic route. It offers the iconic savanna views and a direct look at the smoking Merapi.
Suwanting: Known for being the most difficult and steepest, but offers incredibly lush views.
Thekelan/Cuntel: The "classic" northern routes, often called the "Seven Summits" of Merbabu because they traverse several smaller peaks.
Merbabu is famous for its vast, open grasslands (Sabana 1 and 2). During the golden hour, these hills look like something out of a movie.
The mountain has two main peaks: Kenteng Songo and Triangulasi. They are very close to each other, so most hikers "bag" both.
You’ll likely encounter long-tailed macaques near the lower posts. Keep your snacks tucked away!
Like Sumbing, Merbabu has almost no water sources on the trail. You must carry all your water from the basecamp.
Quick Tips
Booking: You must book your climbing slot online via the National Park's official website (especially for the Selo route), as they have a strict daily quota.
Temperature: It gets surprisingly cold at the savanna campsites. A windbreaker and a proper sleeping bag are non-negotiable.
Dust & Mud: In the dry season, the trails (especially Selo) become very dusty—a buff or mask helps. In the rainy season, they become slippery "mud slides."
