The last eruption of Mount Ijen is on the year of 1999. One of the most famous phenomenon at Mount Ijen is the “Blue Fire” inside the crater. This “Blue Fire” phenomenon happened because, Ijen Crater has a very large sulfur content, it met with high-pressure geothermal heat, so that an oxidation reaction occurs. These sulfur combustion reactions produce heat and light, which are accepted as blue by the receptors of the human eye. Blue fire can only be seen by the human eye when there is no light, so the ideal time to see it is from 2 to 4 in the morning.

The main attraction at Mount Ijen is the large Crater Lake that has much sulfur, which lies hidden between sheer walls of deeply furrowed rock at more than 200 meters. The Ijen crater itself lies at approximately 2,300 meters above sea level. It forms a twin volcano with the now extinct Mount Marapi. The enormous Crater Lake, which is 200 meters deep and covers an area of more than a million square meters, contains about 36 million cubic meters of steaming, acid water.
The view of sulfur miners who climb and go down to the crater is also amazing. A miner puts about 100 kg of yellowish stone in to his basket, before he descends the mountain slope to sell his load, carrying the same basket, going in the same direction, digging the same mineral. You can see this natural picture everyday.

Miners transporting sulfur entirely on foot. They used to use Horses, but on the hazardous terrain, they were less practical. Today, the mine yields nine to twelve tons of sulfur per day. Miner can carry individual loads of up to 100 kg. Often barefooted, up to the rim of crater and then 17 km down the mountainside to a factory near Banyuwangi. Less than 1 $ is what the miners get from each kg of sulfur they can carry.

People can reach Mount Ijen from Banyuwangi or Surabaya. Not many public transport going to this place. Rent a car or tour agent is better for you to visit Ijen Crater.
