Mount Ciremai National Park is included in the administrative territory of the district of Kuningan and Majalengka with +15,500 hectares wide area, and directly adjacent to the 25 villages in the district of Kuningan and 20 villages in the district of Majalengka. The forest in TNGC region is largely a primary natural forests (virgin forest) that grouped into a lowland rain forest, montane rain forest and the subalpine mountain forests. Mount Ciremai are solitary volcano with a double crater (west and east) with a radius of 600 meters and a depth of 250 meters.
The Habitates for some endangered Flora & Fauna
The height of Mount Ciremai reach 3,078 m above sea level is the highest mountain in West Java. This group of lowland forest is the habitat of unique and rare flora and fauna, such as Java Eagle (Spizaetus bartelsi) and Tiger Beetle / Leopard (Panthera pardus).
The forest of Mount Ciremai has more of 119 plant collection consists of 40 collections of orchids and 79 non-orchid collection includes an interesting collection of ornamental plants such as Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) and Dadap Orange (Erythrina sp). The types of orchids that dominates is the kind of Vanda tricolor and Eria sp, while the terrestrial orchid species that dominates is Calenthe triplicata, Macodes sp, Cymbidium sp and Malaxis iridifolia.
In general, vegetation in Mount Ciremai’s forest is dominated by family Huru (Litsea spp), Mareme (Glochidion sp), Mara (Macaranga tanarius), saninten (Castonopsis argentea.), Moutain Citronella (Cymbophogon sp), Hedychium sp. Ariasema sp. And Edelweiss (Anaphalissp) (LIPI, 2001).
Endangered species in the area of Mount Ciremai, among others: Macan Kumbang / Beetle Tiger (Panthera pardus), the Surili (Presbytis comata), and Javanese Eagle (Spyzaetus bartelsi). Other animals are langurs (Presbytis cristata), Roe (Indian muntjac), Long-tailed Macaques (Macaca fascicularis), Python (Python molurus), Meow Congkok (Felis bengalensis), Black Eagle (Ictinaetus malayensis), jays Kiling (Cissa Thalassina ), Sepah Honey (Perictorus miniatus), Walik (Ptilinopuscinctus), Anis (Zoothera citrina) and various other types of birds chirping.
In the area of the national park of Mount Ciremai there are about 20 species of birds restricted range in which there are two types of endangered birds that Cica Matahari (Crocias albonotatus) and poksai Kuda (Garrulax rufrifons) and 2 species of birds are susceptible status Javanese Ciung Mungkal (Cochoa azurea ) and Javanese Plop (Otus angelinae) so that the TNGC area become an important area for birds (important Bird Area) with code JID024 (bird Life International Indonesia 1998).
As the highest mountain in West Java, Mount Ciremai is one of the main goals of the young climbers and nature lovers with an average visits per year is estimated at 15,000 people. There are three hiking trails to the summit of Mount Ciremai ie Palutungan and Linggarjati trail in the district Of Kuningan and Apuy trail in the district of Majalengka.
