Meru betiri National Park is representative of mangrove, swamp forest and lowland rain forest in Java. The park is a habitat for rare plants rafflesia flower (Rafflesia zollingeriana), and various other plants such as mangrove (Rhizophora sp.), Fires (Avicennia sp.), Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus), nyamplung (Calophyllum inophyllum), rengas (Gluta renghas), bungur (Lagerstroemia speciosa), pulai (Alstonia scholaris), Bendo (Artocarpus elasticus), and several types of herbs.

Additionally, Merubetiri National Park has protected animals, including 29 species of mammals, and 180 species of birds. Among them are the banteng (Bos javanicus javanicus), long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis), leopard (Panthera pardus), ajag (Cuon alpinus javanicus), cat (Prionailurus bengalensis javanensis), deer (Cervus timorensis russa), flying squirrels red tails (Iomys horsfieldii), peacock (Pavo muticus), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), green turtle (Chelonia mydas), and turtle Ridel / ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea).

Merubetiri National Park well known as the last habitat of the Javanese striped-tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica) which is rare and protected. Until now, these animals can never be found again and thought to have extinct. The extinction of Javanese tiger stripe means extinction of three species of tigers from eight species in the world (Caspian tiger in Iran, bali and Javanese tiger in Indonesia).

This national park has its own characteristics which is a habitat for the leatherback turtle, hawksbill, green turtles and Ridel turtle / cracked turtle, in Sukamade Beach. In the coastal, was built some simple facilities for breeding turtles from extinction.

Some locations / attractions to visit:

Rajegwesi beach. Nautical tourism, swimming, animal / plant observation and cultural tourism (traditional fishermen).

Sumbersari. 192 hectares meadow to see wildlife attractions such as sambar, deer, antelope and a natural laboratory for research activities.

Sukamade Beach. See the attraction of turtles laying eggs, camping, windsurfing and observation of plants / animals.

Green Bay. Exploring the forest, marine tours and swimming.

The best visiting season: February’s / July each year.

How to reach: Surabaya-Jember-Ambulu with five hours (225 km) by car, Ambulu-Curahnongko-Bandealit with a three-hour (31 km), or Surabaya-Banyuwangi-Jajag with six hours (342 km), Jajag -Sarongan-Sukamade in three hours (60 miles)
